It is well known how hard the lives of salt farmers are. They have to work the fields under extremely hot weather. Their skin is often sunburned. The salt leaves the skin on their feet cracked.
Hon Khoi salt field in Ninh Hoa District, Khanh Hoa Province rests 45 kilometres north of Nha Trang. It’s one of the largest salt fields in the central region. It covers hundreds of hectares. Many salt farmers work there everyday. Their lives remain impoverished despite their back-breaking labour.
Most salt farmers at Hon Khoi are women. They wear conical hats and use bamboo carrying poles on their shoulder to carry salt. These are the images of Vietnam’s salt farmers:
